In de rubriek Opgebloeid licht Voetbalzone wekelijks een speler uit het binnen- of buitenland uit wiens loopbaan na een mindere periode weer volledig tot bloei is gekomen. Met deze keer aandacht voor Martin Ödegaard (20), groeibriljant van Vitesse. De Noorse middenvelder werd afgelopen zomer voor de tweede maal in zijn nog prille loopbaan door Real Madrid gestald in de Eredivisie. Een volgende stap lonkt nu voor Ödegaard, die zijn belofte langzaam maar zeker begint in te lossen.

Net op het moment dat de grond onder zijn voeten hem te heet werd, toverde Leonid Slutsky een Russisch konijn uit de hoge hoed. De oefenmeester van Vitesse ruilde het vertrouwde 4-3-3-systeem begin vorige maand na een teleurstellende reeks van drie wedstrijden zonder overwinning in voor een 4-4-2-systeem en heeft het gelijk voorlopig aan zijn zijde: de laatste drie competitieduels leverden de Arnhemmers drie zeges op. Martin Ödegaard is één van de spelers die profiteert van de tactische aanpassing. De linksbenige technicus is minder gebonden aan zijn positie rechtsvoorin en kan zijn stempel nadrukkelijker op het aanvalsspel van Vitesse drukken, doordat de ploeg in balbezit een extra speler voor de bal heeft. Ödegaard wist tegen Willem II (3-2) en FC Emmen (0-3) te scoren, was in het duel met NAC Breda (4-1) goed voor twee assists en creëerde in die duels ten minste zes doelkansen meer dan iedere andere Eredivisie-speler in de laatste drie speelrondes. Toch is het te simplistisch om de uitmuntende vorm van de Noor louter op te hangen aan het gewijzigde systeem van Vitesse.
De waarheid is namelijk dat Ödegaard al enige tijd is opgebloeid. De fijnbesnaarde middenvelder behoort dit seizoen tot de creatiefste voetballers op de Nederlandse velden - alleen Steven Berghuis (81) en Hakim Ziyech (80) creëerden op bijna driekwart van de competitie meer doelkansen dan Ödegaard (69) - en is ook steeds vaker beslissend voor zijn team. In de 25 wedstrijden die hij deze voetbaljaargang speelde voor Vitesse, was hij goed 7 doelpunten en 6 assists. Ter vergelijking: in dienst van sc Heerenveen kwam hij in 43 duels niet verder dan 3 treffers en 5 assists. De Friezen huurden Ödegaard vanaf januari 2017 voor anderhalf seizoen van Real Madrid, maar een doorslaand succes werd de samenwerking niet. Ondanks dat de frivole spelmaker onder Jurgen Streppel vrijwel altijd verzekerd was van een basisplaats, kreeg hij in het Abe Lenstra Stadion ook te maken met veel kritiek, die zich met name richtte tot zijn rendement.
Ödegaard maakte op 23 mei 2015 in de thuiswedstrijd tegen Getafe zijn debuut voor Real Madrid. Sinds zijn komst in januari 2015 van Stromsgodset IF speelde Ödegaard pas twee duels voor de Koninklijke.
Riemer van der Velde gaf in januari 2018 toe dat hij meer had verwacht van de verhuurperiode van Ödegaard bij Heerenveen. In gesprek met de Volkskrant stelde de oud-voorzitter van de Friese club dat de Noorse middenvelder ‘met zijn kwaliteit borg had moeten staan voor een grotere prestatie’. Van der Velde plaatste echter ook openlijk zijn vraagtekens bij de wijze waarop Ödegaard werd gebruikt door de technische staf: "Je kunt je afvragen wat zijn ideale positie is. De betrokkenen bij Heerenveen denken daar misschien iets anders over dan ik." Ödegaard was in de eerste twee maanden na zijn komst van Real Madrid de nummer tien in het 4-2-3-1-systeem dat door Streppel werd gehanteerd. Heerenveen daalde in diezelfde periode echter hard af op de ranglijst, waardoor de coach er in het slot van het seizoen voor koos een extra controleur toe te voegen aan zijn middenveld. Dat ging in de as van het veld ten koste van Ödegaard. De creatieveling eindigde zijn eerste halfjaar bij Heerenveen als hangende rechtsbuiten en speelde uiteindelijk tot het einde van zijn verhuurperiode op die positie.
Streppel had er volgens Van der Velde goed aan gedaan Ödegaard een prominentere rol te geven in zijn elftal: "Ik zou hem altijd als vormgever op het middenveld zetten. Hij kan echt fantastisch voetballen. Als ik elf Ödegaards had, speelden ze alle elf. Ik zou er zelfs een in de goal zetten. Dan weet je zeker dat je de bal nooit verliest", zo vertelde de erevoorzitter van Heerenveen. Streppel hield vast aan zijn eigen visie, maar koesterde de creativiteit van Ödegaard. Nadat de dribbelaar vorig seizoen in de thuiswedstrijd tegen Roda JC Kerkrade met knullig balverlies aan de basis stond van een tegendoelpunt, kon hij rekenen op de steun van zijn trainer: "Er staan zes mensen achter de bal. Moet hij de bal dan op safe spelen?", vroeg Streppel zich hardop af voor de camera van FOX Sports. "Hij is de man die creatief moet zijn, van de key passes: die kan hij geweldig spelen. Dat moeten we lekker zo laten. Laten we blij zijn dat dit soort spelers nog in Nederland rondlopen."
Nadat Streppel afgelopen zomer bij Heerenveen plaats had gemaakt voor Jan Olde Riekerink, wilde de club naar verluidt graag weer in zee met Ödegaard. De middenvelder zag een nieuwe verhuurperiode in de Eredivisie wel zitten, maar koos er uiteindelijk voor een contract voor twaalf maanden te tekenen met Vitesse. Nieuwbakken trainer Slutsky was tevreden over de middenvelders die hij reeds tot zijn beschikking had, maar erkende halverwege augustus dat een type als Ödegaard nog ontbrak in zijn selectie: "Een aangever. Ik zoek een echte nummer 10, creatief, met een pass, scorend vermogen, voetbalintelligentie. Dat heeft die jongen allemaal", zo werd de Russische keuzeheer geciteerd door Voetbal International. Ödegaard zelf gaf tegenover de NOS aan Vitesse ten opzichte van Heerenveen als een stap hogerop te zien. Ook het idee dat hij in Stadion GelreDome als nummer tien zou gaan opereren, sprak hem aan: "Op die positie voel ik me het lekkerst. Het is een goed teken dat de club me beschouwt als een nummer tien", zo zei hij.
Ödegaard speelde vanaf januari 2017 anderhalf seizoen voor sc Heerenveen. Erevoorzitter Riemer van der Velde hekelde de wijze waarop de middenvelder werd gebruikt door trainer Jurgen Streppel.
Ödegaard stelde zichzelf bij zijn komst naar Arnhem enkele doelstellingen. Het opkrikken van zijn rendement stond hoog op zijn wensenlijst. Dat is hem gelukt, al gebeurde dat vooral als hangende rechtsbuiten. De huurling van Real Madrid speelde dit seizoen immers pas vijfmaal als klassieke nummer tien; in verreweg de meeste van zijn wedstrijden kwam hij vanaf de rechterflank. Dat heeft echter zo zijn redenen gehad. Zo zijn de opties voor Vitesse rechtsvoorin door blessureleed nu eenmaal beperkt. Zomeraanwinst Hillary Gong liep dit seizoen tot tweemaal toe een zware knieblessure op, terwijl ook Roy Beerens door fysieke malheur al een groot aantal wedstrijden aan zich voorbij moest laten gaan. Chelsea-huurling Charly Musonda kwam dit seizoen door een ernstige knieblessure zelfs nog helemaal niet in actie, al speelt de Belgisch jeugdinternational zijn wedstrijden bij voorkeur vanuit de as van het veld of als linksbuiten. Daardoor moet Slutsky keuzes maken.
Doordat Vitesse met Matus Bero beschikt over een aanvallende middenvelder die naar behoren presteert en verdediger Vyacheslav Karavaev op rechts voor diepte zorgt, moet Ödegaard zich tevreden stellen met een vrije rol op de flank. Dat bevalt hem echter uitstekend, zo liet hij in november weten aan de Gelderlander: "Ik krijg bij Vitesse heel veel vrijheid. En dat doet me goed. Ik ben geen authentieke vleugelspits. Ik moet zwerven. De wisselwerking met Karavaev op rechts en met Bero op het middenveld loopt daarvoor lekker. Dan kom ik ook het best tot mijn recht. Ik vind de rol van schaduwspits of hangend op de vleugel allebei leuk. En ik kan ook nog als controlerende middenvelder spelen. Ik geniet gewoon." De recente switch naar het 4-4-2-systeem lijkt voor Ödegaard evenwel goed uit te pakken. Hij stond vorige maand in de uitwedstrijd tegen FC Emmen aan het begin van vrijwel iedere gevaarlijke aanval van Vitesse en heeft nu met Alexander Büttner, die als linkermiddenvelder een nieuwe rol heeft, een extra afspeelmogelijkheid in de diepte.
Ödegaard is geen luie nummer tien die zich beperkt tot het geven van de killerpass. Hij bemoeit zich met de opbouw, laat zich inzakken om de lijnen uit te zetten. De veertienvoudig international van Noorwegen leeft niet louter van doelpunten en assists: tegen Willem II en FC Emmen had hij meer balcontacten dan welke Vitesse-speler dan ook en creëerde hij in totaal tien doelkansen. Ödegaard staart zich zelf gelukkig niet blind op het maken van doelpunten en het geven van assists. Hij gaat niet geforceerd voetballen om de scorebordjournalist te pleasen. "Ik ben nu vooral van de pre-assists", vertelde hij enkele maanden geleden na afloop van de uitwedstrijd tegen Willem II (1-3) aan de Gelderlander. Voor de buitenwacht is het prettig dat Ödegaard de laatste maanden steeds vaker op het wedstrijdformulier verschijnt als doelpuntenmaker of assistgever; de frêle Noor haalt uit meer voldoening: "Als acties zo overtuigend slagen, sta ik echt wel met een lach op het veld, hoor."
Sinds het begin van het huidige kalenderjaar creëerde geen enkele speler in de Eredivisie meer doelkansen dan Ödegaard (32 in totaal).
Voetbalcommentator Arman Avsaroglu nam de revival van Ödegaard enige tijd geleden al waar. "Frenkie de Jong gaat vertrekken (naar Barcelona, red.). Waarom zou Ödegaard geen goede vervanger kunnen zijn voor Ajax?", vroeg hij zich eind november hardop af in de voetbalpodcast van de NOS. Dat was absoluut geen gekke suggestie van Avsaroglu, ware het niet dat Ödegaard in het huidige Ajax beter tot zijn recht zou komen op de positie van Ziyech, hangend op rechts. De flair waarmee de twintigjarige middenvelder voetbalt zal in de Johan Cruijff ArenA ongetwijfeld op waardering kunnen rekenen. Ödegaard behoort tot de fijnste voetballers op de Nederlandse velden. Hij is creatief en beschikt in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld de in de media eveneens genoemde Ritsu Doan over een bepaalde vastigheid in zijn spel. Voor de rol die Frenkie de Jong centraal op het middenveld vertolkt bij Ajax, komt Ödegaard vermoedelijk in defensief opzicht tekort. Enkele meters hoger op het veld zou hij echter weleens de gedroomde opvolger van de naar alle waarschijnlijkheid eveneens vertrekkende Ziyech kunnen zijn. Het Nederlandse voetbal is Ödegaard op het lijf geschreven, maar een doorbraak bij Real Madrid, waar zijn contract na dit seizoen nog twee jaar doorloopt, zal hij stiekem nog niet uit het hoofd hebben gezet.
